BDLT Report: Dhaka North City Corporation-DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam took charge of the office for the second consecutive term on May 13. Acting DNCC Mayor Mohammad Zamal Mostafa formally handed over the charge to Atiqul at noon at his office. DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Abdul Hai and other senior officials were present at the charge-taking function which was not made a public programme to prevent spread of coronavirus. At an online press briefing after taking office, the DNCC Mayor pledged to deploy his best efforts in the battles against Covid-19 and dengue. Atiqul said relief distribution is ongoing in the capital and all necessary measures will be taken to make sure that all lower-income and poor people in the area receive relief. Outlining different steps to combat the novel coronavirus, Atiqul said handwashing facilities have been arranged on different roads in the DNCC area. Further, he mentioned that virus disinfectant has been sprayed, via water bowsers, everywhere across the city. “We will provide health insurance facilities, for free, if any DNCC staff member is infected with the novel coronavirus while on duty,” he said, adding that Ward Councillors will be included in these activities. Atiqul said the city corporation, with the help of NGO Brac, will set up eight booths for collecting samples of Covid-19 within a week while there is a plan to set up a coronavirus testing lab. Highlighting different initiatives of the DNCC to tackle the Covid-19 situation, Atiqul urged the house owners in the city corporation areas not to harass the physicians and nurses who are serving the coronavirus patients. He warned of stern actions against harassment of health service providers. Atiqul Islam took oath of the office as DNCC Mayor on 27 February. The polls to the DNCC were held on February 1 where he won contesting the election with the ruling Awami League ticket.
